Loughborough
Loughborough is a busy market town with a vibrant history with first reference of the town in the 1086 Doomsday book. The town is situated in the borough of Charnwood, named after Charnwood Forest situated to the west, which is home to some of the oldest rocks and fossils in Britain. In the centre of the area is the broad flat plain of the River Soar, and to the east are the rounded rolling hills of the Leicestershire Wolds – with some of England’s loveliest and most unspoilt villages.
The location is ideally situated for exploring the cities for Nottingham, Leicester and Derby, as well as being close to a number of tourist attractions such as the Peak District, Sherwood Forest (the home of Robin Hood) and the National Space Centre. Close by is Bradgate Park with roaming herds of red and fallow deer. The park will forever be associated with England’s ‘Queen of Nine Days’, the Lady Jane Grey whose home was situated within the Park.
Loughborough is also well renowned in the U.K. for its sports provisions. The University has won the British Universities and Colleges Sport Overall Championship for 38 consecutive years. While the University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences has for the last two years been rated as the best university in the world for sports-related subjects in the global QS higher education league table. The campus also offers state-of-the-art homes for national sporting bodies including British Swimming and the England & Wales Cricket Board among others.
